Change is the only constant. Now it is clearer than ever.
Let’s face it: we do live in interesting times. Just as our parents and grandparents did…
Recently, I have been laid off from a job. It was not related to conference interpreting or translation, still I loved it, and it was an important source of income for me.
I am a highly skilled professional, and I excelled at what I was doing, but even so it was not enough to endure the pandemic crisis.
There are a lot of people who find themselves now in a similar situation.
Stability is an illusion, it leads to stagnation, it is a comfortable golden cage. Breaking free or being released is scary, the world outside is vast and filled with risks, but it is also beautiful and worth exploring, it gives you the chance to fly high.
When life gives you a change, take it and shape it
After all, that is what simultaneous interpreters do when the speaker suddenly goes off-script, changes the subject, or the language of the speech, which actually happens quite often. We instantly adapt, that is the key to succeed in this profession. It is the only way to keep going.
Constant change is not ideal, it is not easy, it is not always what we wish for. It is life. It is exciting.
